"Bells of Peace is a 4 octave bell choir/5 octave hand chime choir that has been ringing for about twenty years. The group started with two octaves of bells and no sheet music. The first director wrote the score for "Kum Ba Yah" on a large piece of cardboard and used that for the sheet music. After attending workshops and classes, the bell choir advanced quickly. Two years later, the first youth bell choir was formed. Prince of Peace now has three full bell choirs and a smaller bell ensemble called Hill Street Bells. Four of the original Bells of Peace members continue to ring with the group. Several of the members began ringing as elementary students just five years ago.
During the concert, Bells of Peace will be ringing four pieces based on hymn tunes that highlight the music of several church seasons with an interesting variety of handbell techniques. The organ joins the group on the traditional Bach "Now Thank We All Our God." A contemplative "Beautiful Savior" showcases the meditative nature of Lent. In "We Three Kings" a variety of ringing and malleting techniques are displayed along with chimes, energetic percussion rhythms and the MIDI sounds of the organ (a fine orchestra oboe and chamber strings). And as a forshadowing of Easter, the group shines with percussion on "Now the Green Blade Rises."
In addition, organist Angie Henning and percussionist Dan Heimer will feature the organ and trap set on a jazzed-up spiritual medley "Go Down, Moses/Wade in the Water." They will invite audience members to join them with percussion instruments on a spicy Spanish hymn. An enjoyable time will be had by the whole family! "
The concert is free. A free-will offering will assist the guild to support its ongoing youth scholarships and chapter education programs. A reception will follow.
