About Prince of Peace

New to Prince of Peace?

Welcome!  We are so glad that you have found our website and hope that you will take some time to explore and learn about the people of Prince of Peace.  However, there is nothing like being within our community to get the feel of our faith and our commitment to doing God's work in the world.
We invite you to visit us for worship on Sunday mornings at 9 AM.   We also worship Wednesday evenings @ 6:30pm year round.
The third Sunday of each month we offer a special worship at 10:10 AM at the round tables in our Fellowship Hall.  Our 10:10 Living Table Worship is more interactive and participatory.  It is our 3 in 1 worship:  Breakfast, Worship & Faith Formation, all in one hour!
Our Sunday School and Adult Forum is offered at 10 AM. on Sunday mornings during the school year.  Our office hours are weekdays from 8 AM. to 3 PM.

To which denomination does Prince of Peace belong?

We are a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA.)

How long have you been around?

Prince of Peace was organized in October of 1959.  We recently celebrated our 50th anniversary.

How big is Prince of Peace?

Our average worship attendance each weekend is 375 people.  We have a significant number of members under the age of 18. We have seen our demographics shifting to include "active seniors" in the last five years to complement our young family members.

Do you have traditional or contemporary worship?

Our worship style is "comfortable" and yet traditional.  We rotate through a variety of worship styles, but on any given weekend all the services are usually the same.  Our pastors preach in an educational and conversational way, rooted in Holy Scripture and relevant to daily living.  We have a Children's time at worship and encourage all ages to participate in the many opportunities for worship leadership.  We are definitely a "kid-friendly" worship experience, however we also offer Nursery facilities.  Young people are apprenticed early into worship leadership roles.

What kind of opportunities are there to serve?

Many. Our permission giving style of leadership would ask the questions: “Does an idea fit with God’s mission to love and bless the world?” and “Are you able?” We bless people for what they are doing in their daily lives convinced that God needs us more in the world than in the church building.

We support ELCA World Hunger and monthly causes Beyond Our Doors.  In addition we work with international support through Ethiopian Health Clinics and local ministry through La Crescent Food Share Program.  Ingatherings of clothing, goods, recyclables, etc. are ongoing projects.

What about your staffing?

Our two pastors both have over 20 years of minsterial experience.  Our staff includes a Director of Children, Youth and Family Ministries, a Director of Music Ministries, a Peli Family Center Director, Custodian, and an Office Manager.  We also reach out through our Peli School & Peli Family Center and their staff.

What do you offer in youth programming?

We have a Preschool (ages 3 to 4) and Peli Family Center (infant and toddler care, and surround care for our preschool).  We also offer Sunday School, Confirmation, Jesus and Me (JAM) Club for grades 3 and 4, Veggie Tale Movie Nites for our young families, Together in Faith, confirmation for grades 8-10 and an active High School Peer Ministry.

I don't have any kids.  Is there anything for me?

Absolutely.  We have a variety of Bible Study opportunities and Adult Faith Development classes for all levels.  We have ongoing discussion groups and places where you can simply wonder aloud about spiritual issues.  We encourage ongoing inquiry into faith development and spiritual journeying. We like to say, “Come As You Are”. In the midst of a very busy world you are welcome at worship, you are welcome at the Communion table, you are welcome at Prince of Peace.

Our Story

Just over 50 years ago last week a bunch of mostly 20 and 30-somethings started this church. They imagined a spiritual home where others could only see an orchard. Fifty years ago they wondered…

What kind of church are we going to make here?

What kind of church are we going to be?

They were imagining a place where we tell the sacred stories of our one, wild and precious life. A place we gather to coax those stories out of one another because church is people and relationships.

Today our congregation of 1,600+ members worships on Saturdays and Sundays and rejoices in the many children that participate along with those who have been with the congregation since it began in 1959. Sunday school is offered September through May. Summer programs include Bible school, music camp, mission trips and Bible camp sessions.

Prince of Peace is served by two pastors and specialists in music, youth, and early childhood. They guide the congregation to live out its calling in worship, education, community building, and service.

We are home to the La Crescent Area Food Shelf and we offer our facility as meeting space for many local groups.

Music And The Arts

The arts are especially important aspects of our worship life at Prince of Peace.  Either a vocal choir or a hand bell choir, a brass group or a praise band provide an accent to worship on most Sunday mornings, and our children's choirs (Cherub and Global Kids) bring the joy of young voices to our worship regularly.  Special music is also provided by soloists and ensembles and we have a growing interest in a new ministry of liturgical dance.  Liturgical decorators enhance the church seasons, expressing the moods, the symbols and the overall feeling of each season of the church year.

We are people

Rooted in the Word, inspired by the cross,

Making God visible

by welcoming, sharing and serving.
